BASIC RESPONSIBILITIES

The basic responsibilities of the Institutional Ethics Committee (IEC) are:

  • To ensure a competent review of all ethical aspects of the project proposals received by it.
  • To safeguard the dignity, rights and well being of the potential research participants.
  • To protect the universal ethical values and international scientific standards without amending local community values and customs.
  • To assist the development and the education of a research community.

COMPOSITION

The IEC of BPHRF is a multi-disciplinary and multi-sectorial in composition. IEC has two chairpersons. The member secretary and members are nominated by the Director. It is generally accepted that a minimum of five persons (including the member secretary) is required to form the quorum. The committee is a mix of medical/ non-medical, scientific and non-scientific persons including lay persons to represent the differed points of view.
